Needing instant gratification? Grab a paint can.
One of the easiest and most inexpensive home renovation projects is painting. Many home improvement stores offer a large selection of paint choices. Think about the color choices you migrate to. Do you prefer
cool colors and
warm tones? Are you drawn to the dark or bright hues? Which room are you tackling first and what is it's size? What mood are you trying to achieve from your renovation?
Once you answer these questions...choose a paint swatch and view it under different types of light. Colors appear different in flourescent, incandescent and natural light. Identify what is the primary lighting for the room you are about to transform. Keep in mind that colors reflect off of themselves adding to the intensity. You may want to choose one tone lighter than your ideal color.
Next you need to identify the type of sheen you prefer. There are four primary types of paint sheen.
Flat is exactly as described....a flat paint texture with no shine. Flat paint is used primarily in dry room locations. Take into consideration that flat paint does not lend well to scrubbing. If you have sticky fingers in the house....you may want a different type of finish.
Satin or
Eggshell paint has a slight shine to it's texture. This finish lends better to scrubbing and reflects little light.
Semi-gloss paint has a higher degree of shine. This finish scrubs well and is used mostly in bathrooms and kitchens.
Gloss paint is used primarily for trim. Gloss finish scrubs very well and takes abuse from shoes and discarded items.
Have the salesperson calculate how much paint you will need based on your room size.
Other supplies you will need include:
Paint rollers
2" trim brush (I prefer angled)
drop clothes
2" blue painting tape
Paint tray
